Love Lessons from an Indian Courtesan

Growing up I used to watch a lot of Indian movies.

My fave Indian movie then was Devdas. The movie was such a rave it hit Guinness book of world records in 2002 as the most expensive film to be made in Bollywood history.

A story about two lovers that couldn’t be together due to their families being against it.

I used to cry watching that silly movie over and over again.

What caught my attention most particularly in the movie was the Courtesan called Chandramukhi.

Courtesans are basically prostitutes that have wealthy clients.

She was my favorite character actually and I’ll tell you why.

If we say the super wealthy rule this society, I’d say the courtesans rule the super wealthy. #myopinion

Plus I totally understand courtesans lives are not perfect and they have some dark stories.

In the movie devdas, I noticed how she adorned herself with so much jewelry.

Her dance moves

Feminine charm and grace

Her facial expressions and eye contact.

The way she walked and swayed her body.

Her calm energy

It was all impeccable.

I used to wonder why these men were crazy about women like these. But now I understand.

She gave these wealthy men the thrill, and excitement they so much dreamed of.

She made them feel free

She made them feel needed

She made them feel accepted as they are.

She listened to them without any form of ridicule or judgement.

She broke down their walls and they shared deep secrets about their lives easily. Secrets they wouldn’t even share with their wives.

The biggest business deals were usually closed at the feet of courtesans.

When it comes to love, so many women do not understand this about men.

Some men can be awful, cheat and not even give their wives money.

But when they meet a woman who can carefully execute these “skills”, they become like puppies in their palms.

While some women are just simply bad lovers.

If only they are patient enough to understand certain aspects of men.

Anyhow,

I feel the biggest mistake she made in the movie was falling in love with the main guy Devdas who didn’t want to sleep with her because he was so much in love with his childhood sweetheart, Paro.

I love the fact that, despite Devdas despised her, she took care of him when he was dealing with his alcohol addiction and she became good friends with Paro. She didn’t let her imagination run wild with Jealousy.

I mean courtesans do fall in love, get married and keep their marriages because of their deep understanding of men.

They do deserve love like everyone else.

So What’s the lesson here?

Apply these “skills” from courtesans to keep the spark alive in your love life.

Cheers,
